Words like north, south, east, and west are direction words. These words describe where places are. It is important to know what direction to go. This way you can find new places.

There are some helpful ways to tell which direction you are facing. The sun rises in the east. It sets in the west. This can help you remember where east and west are.

There are also ways to remember where north and south are. Stand facing east. Hold your left hand out to the side. It points north. Hold your right hand out to the side. It points south.

There is a special tool that can help tell directions. This tool is called a compass. A compass has direction words and an arrow that always points to the north.
