How do we know about what happened in Pompeii?

Reorder the following

• Around 1pm, Mount Vesuvius erupted violently.

• Small tremors were felt in the city of Pompeii.

• At 7 am, the pyroclastic surge reached Pompeii. It destroyed the buildings and killed anyone remaining in the city.

• At 2pm a second pyroclastic surge was released.

• The volcanic ash cloud reached 30km and began to collapse.

What were houses like in Pompeii?

• Only large houses would have their own kitchen. In Pompeii many of these have been found, still with the remains of food in the cooking pots.

• House in Pompeii had their own bathrooms which included a toilet and a bath tub.

• Most ordinary people would have a smaller fire for cooking and heat. They would buy bread from bakeries or markets. Over 30 bakeries have been found at Pompeii.

• All houses in Pompeii had private temples. These were used to honour their Gods.
