RIZAL’S LIFE FAMILY

also known as “Ute” or “Pepe,” was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna. He passed away on December 30, 1896, at the age of 35 in Bagumbayan, Manila. He was the seventh child among his siblings. He was a reformist who advocated political reforms during the Spanish colony.

  Father of Jose Rizal, was born on May 11, 1818 in Biñan, Laguna, and died on January 5, 1898, at the age of 79. He was one of the children of Juan Monica Mercado and Cirila Alejandro. His wife was Teodora Alonso Realonda. He studied Latin and the Philosophy College of San Jose in Manila. After the death of their parents, he moved to Calamba and became a tenant farmer of the Dominican-owned Hacienda. Mercado was a well-respected man in their hometown of Calamba, where the citizens made him the “Cabeza de barangay,” which means the head of the town.

  on the other hand, is the mother of Jose Rizal. She was born on November 9, 1827, in Meisik, Tondo, Manila, and died on August 16, 1911, at the age of 84. She was the second child of Lorenzo Alberto Alonso and Brijida de Quintos. She studied at Colegio de Sta. Rosa in Manila. She was 20 years old when she married Jose Rizal’s father, Francisco Mercado, and they lived in Calamba, Laguna. Teodora was a wealthy woman during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. She was known for being a disciplinarian and a hard-working mother. She was a woman of refined culture and character, with exemplary literary talents, a fortitude of a Spartan Woman, and with business ability. Her own medical condition served as an inspiration for Rizal to pursue medicine.

       was the eldest among their siblings. She was born on June 4, 1850, in Calamba, Laguna, and died on September 14, 1913, at the age of 63. Her nickname was “Neneng.” She was married to Manuel Hidalgo and played a significant role in the publication of Pascual H. Poblete’s Tagalog translation of the novel Noli Me Tangere, written by her brother, Jose Rizal.

was the second eldest among the siblings. He was born on March 9, 1851, in Calamba, Laguna, and died on April 13, 1930, at the age of 79. He was the only brother of Dr. Jose Rizal. There was a 10-year age gap between him and Jose Rizal. _____played a significant role in the Philippine Revolution and held the rank of Major General in the revolutionary army. He was the confidant of Jose Rizal and he convinced the young hero to study in Europe without their parents’ permission.

was born on October 29, 1852, in Calamba, Laguna, and died on June 24, 1939, at the age of 86. She was affectionately known as “Sisa.” She was the third child in the Rizal family. She was married to Antonio Lopez and was considered the most supportive sister of Dr. Jose Rizal. _____had a remarkable ability to recite all the poems written by Jose Rizal from memory. She was known for her deep love and admiration for her brother’s literary works. She was a musician and educator of Pueblo de Morong (former name of Rizal Province).

was the fourth child in the Rizal family. She was born in 1855 and she died while giving birth on August 1887 at the age of 32. She was also known as “Ypia.” ____was married to Silvestre Ubaldo.

was born in 1857 in Biñan, Laguna, and died on December 25, 1919, at the age of 62. She was the fifth child in the Rizal family. _____held a leadership role within the Rizal family. She was married to Mariano Herbosa, from Calamba, Laguna. Their children were Delfina, first wife of General Salvador Natividad who helped Marcela Agoncillo make the first Philippine flag in Hongkong; Concepcion; Patrocinio, who married Jose Battalones; Teodisio, who married Lucina Vitingco; Estanislao and Paz, Victoria and Jose. Herbosa died of cholera and was denied of Christian burial being the brother-in-law of Jose Rizal.

  She was born in 1859 and passed away in 1945 at the age of 85. She was the sixth child in Rizal Family. She was also known as "Biang." She was married to Daniel Faustino Cruz. She was the only sister of Rizal who lived up to the 1960s.

also known as "Concha" by her siblings and relatives, was born in 1862 and at the age of three, she died of sickness and her death was Rizal’s first sorrow in life. She was the eighth among the ten siblings.
