Archaeologists are committed to preserving archaeological sites and remains for future generations to investigate. There are laws around the world that forbid people from removing or destroying artifacts and features. Even though there are laws in place, looting of artifacts still occurs. People loot, or steal, artifacts to add to their personal collections or to sell them to make a profit. These individuals have no interest in preserving cultural heritage or gaining scientific knowledge from archaeological sites and artifacts. 

In the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has an Art Crime Team that investigates stolen artifacts and cultural property. This team was created in 2004 and has 20 special agents. Since the team was created, it has recovered over 15,000 items valued at $800 million. For example, in 2014, the team seized over 7,000 artifacts from a man in Indiana who had stolen artifacts from around the world. After seizing the artifacts, the agents carefully removed them from the man’s basement and stored them until they could be returned to their owners.
