Perched on top of Ms. May's head was a floppy straw hat with a wide brim. It cast a shadow down over her face as she knelt in the middle of the bed of petunias. Her green gloves came up past her wrists and she used the back of one hand to wipe the sweat off of her forehead, leaving a streak of potting soil behind.​ ​ (a)   ​
