October 29, 1805 – Interactions with Native Americans

Came to a village of 7 houses. I observed in the lodge of the chief a scarlet and blue cloth, sword, jacket, and hat. He took out his bow and quiver to show me then directed his wife to hand him his medicine bag, which he opened and showed us 14 fingers of his enemies which he had taken in war. I concluded they were Snake Indians. We purchased three dogs, smoked, and Peter Cruzatte played on the violin and the men danced.
