Juan got on an elevator at the middle floor of a building, went up 4 floors, down 3 floors, up 1 floor, and down 9 floors, where he left the elevator on the ground floor (the ground floor is equal to 0). 

1. How many floors are in the building?

You can use the following equation to determine the floor that Juan started on:

f + 4 + (-3) + 1 + (-9) = 0

If you solve this, you get f = 7. If he started on floor 7 and it is in the center of the building with the first floor as 0, then there are 14 floors total (7 floors below floor 7 (0-6) and 7 floors above floor 7 (8-14)).
