How to Play - Red Light, Green Light

1. 1. Choose one player to be the "stoplight."

1. 2. The rest of the players should form a line about 15 feet away from the "stoplight."

2. 3. The "stoplight" faces away from the line of players and says "green light." At this point, the players are allowed to move toward the "stoplight."

3. 4. At any point during the game, the "stoplight" may say "red light" and turn around. If the "stoplight" sees anyone moving, that person is out.

4. 5. Play continues when the "stoplight" turns back around and says "green light."

5. 6. The first player to touch the "stoplight" wins the game! He or she earns the right to be the "stoplight" in the next game.

Rocks break down because of changes in the weather. The most important thing that a plant needs is soil. Soil is found in various colors depending on the region and the parent material found there to form soil. Some varieties of soil are red soil, black soil, yellow soil, and so on.

Habitat means the natural living place of animals or plants. Forests are habitats for wild animals and plants. Humans clear forests to grow food and to build houses. This spoils the habitat of many animals and plants. Then many wild animals cannot find food within their habitat. Such wild animals may become extinct. When an animal becomes extinct, it means that it can no longer be found anywhere on Earth. We should save natural habitats to save animals.

Gold was first found in California in 1848. Workers at a sawmill found bits of gold in a river. A man named John Sutter owned this sawmill. Soon after, many people heard about the gold. They began to come to California. They wanted to search for gold. In 1849, about 90,000 people went to California. Both men and women hoped to get rich. They became known as the "49ers." Most of the men worked in the gold mines and gold fields. Some women did laundry for money. Other women took jobs cooking or sewing.
     The Gold Rush helped California grow quickly. Roads, schools, and churches were built to meet the needs of the new settlers. New cities soon formed. John Sutter's son founded the city of Sacramento on their family land. In 1879, Sacramento became the capital city of California.

In the 1800s, more and more white settlers came to North America. They started spreading throughout the land. The U.S. government passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830. This law made more room for the settlers. It also changed the way of life for Native Americans in southeastern states like Georgia and Florida. Many Native Americans had to give up their land. This law forced them to leave their homes. However, many tribes did not want to leave.
     The Cherokee tribe wanted to fight the law. Leaders of the Cherokee tribe went to court to keep their homeland. In 1832, the U.S. Supreme Court decided the tribes were right. Yet, President Andrew Jackson did not agree with this ruling. He sent the army to remove the Cherokee. Tribes had to walk thousands of miles west to what is now Oklahoma. Their journey is called the "Trail of Tears."
