How should I identify key words in a question when using the question strategy?

• Highlight the key words or write them down on your paper.

• I do not need to do either.

• Write the key words down on my paper.

• Highlight the key words for each question on the screen.

Process of Elimination

• Do not eliminate answers. That is a waste of time.

• Eliminate any answer choices that are not relevant to the question.

• If I re-read my "keywords" in the question after reading each answer choice, it will make the process of elimination more accurate.

When using context clues to answer a question regarding an "unfamiliar word/phrase" or how the word/phrase is "used in the passage"... what is the best practice?

• Guess the correct answer based on my opinion.

• Educated guess based on my opinion.

• Read the sentence that the unfamiliar word is included in.

• Read the sentence that the unfamiliar word is included in, as well as the sentence before and after the unfamiliar word/phrase. Look for other hints/clues such as synonyms, antonyms, definition, etc.

Everyone else in the room where you are testing is finished....what should you do?

• Be aware of how much time that I have left and use every minute of it, if needed. I am excited to see how far I can grow from last year's test score and I also know that even if I finish, we still have to sit here quietly until the testing session ends as a school.

• Click "c" for all remaining answers and submit.

• Hurry and finish so they will stop staring at you.

Should I bother with reading the title?

• Absolutely NOT - it's a total waste of time.

• Maybe, it depends on the passage.

Do I have to read the passages and answer the questions in the order that they are in on the EOG?

• Absolutely, why would you do it any other way?

• No, as long as I flag the questions/passage that I am skipping, I can always go back to it. It's better for me to NOT waste my brain energy on those that are more difficult and devote the time and energy to the easier (for me) passages/questions.

• You do not have to, but it's recommended.

When I encounter a poem on the EOG- what is the FIRST thing that I should do?

• Skip it- no one enjoys poetry.

• Read the title.

• Laugh at it.

• Read it 3 times!

• Speed read through the poem and then answer the questions.

• Read it 3 times.

• 1st read- gist

  2nd read- literal meaning

  3rd read- deeper meaning.

When I summarize a passage......

• I should restate it word for word.

• I should restate it in my own words so that I don't plagiarize.

• I should focus ONLY on the main points/idea.

• I should focus on EVERY detail no matter how big or small.
