Can I post stories on issues that are under UNHCR's mandate, but that are not in the public domain, and that UNHCR has not yet confirmed or commented on?

• • Yes, as long as you clearly state that it is not confirmed by UNHCR.

• • No, your post could be viewed as UNHCR confirming the story when it has not yet made a public pronouncement. 

Can I share a news article on my Social Media account?

• • If it is from a credible source and provides the UN position on the subject, Yes. 

• • Yes, as long as it is interesting and relevant to your followers.

Who is responsible for my online reputation?

• • My employer.

• • I am/Me. 

Which principles do I need to keep in mind when using my Social Media accounts either to post, share or like?

• • UNHCR 9 code of conduct principles, in particular principles 2 and 3, as well as the UN principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence. 

• • Only the UN principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence.

When is it okay to post about a government, country or politician?

• • When expressing your personal opinions.

• • When retweeting or sharing a UN or UNHCR statement. 

Who can post about sensitive issues, including as related to UNHCR?

• • Anyone within the organization.

• • UNHCR personnel that are specifically authorised to be spokespersons for the Organisation or for a given issue/topic. 

Whose personal information can I put online?

• • No one's. This is strictly forbidden as it could put you, or others, at risk. 

• • Anyone’s, as long as they have given verbal consent.

Can I post photos of forcibly displaced and stateless persons?

• • Yes, as long as you do not share their names.

• • Only if the images come from the official UNHCR library database that can be used publicly, or if you have obtained consent from the individuals. No personal information should ever be shared, including location of the people. 

Should I respond to online “trolls”?

• • Yes, always defend your position.

• • No, try to ignore them. You can block or mute users. If you feel threatened or experience abusive or challenging behavior on social media, inform the social media platforms support team. You can also seek guidance from the Communications Department on what to do.

How should I reply to individuals challenging my opinions online?

• • If you wish to reply, do it respectfully.

• • You should always ignore them.
