If you want to easily mark up your text, you can use the PUMA strategy to help you.  PUMA stands for:

• P:  point of view U:  underline text M:  mention title A:  annotate
• P:  Perspective U:  understand text M:  main idea A:  answer questions 
• P:  Parts U: Underline important ideas M:  Main idea A:  Answer multiple choice questions
• Parts (label the parts of the text), U (Underline known words and figure out what they mean using context clues), M (main idea of each section), A (Ask questions to the author).
