The French and Indian War (1754–1763), part of the Seven Years' War, was fought between British America and New France. It began over territorial disputes in the Ohio River Valley. Early French victories were led by General Montcalm, but British strategies under William Pitt turned the tide. The decisive Battle of Quebec in 1759 led to the Treaty of Paris in 1763, where France ceded much of its North American territory. The war's aftermath nearly doubled Britain's debt, prompting new taxes on American colonies, which contributed to the Revolutionary War.
