THE LEGEND OF SURABAYA
Once upon a time, there were two strong animals living in East Java. They were Sura the shark and Baya the crocodile. Both of them lived in the sea. They were friends. However, when they were starving, they became very greedy. (1)
One day, Sura and Baya were searching for food. Then Baya saw a goat and said, “ This is my lunch!” Sura yelled, “ No! I haven’t eaten for two days, so this is my lunch. “ Both of them quarreled. But they got tired after fighting for several hours. “I’m tired of fighting, Baya,” said Sura. He planned to stop their habit. “Yeah, me too,” replied Baya in agreement. “ What should we do to stop fighting? Do you have any idea? “ asked Baya. Sura thought for a while “ I’ve got an idea. Let’s divide our territory. Since I live in the water, I will look for the food in the sea, and you will search for your food on the land,” said Sura. The beach will become the border between us, so we will never meet again,” he added. Baya considered the idea for a while then agreed to Sura’s suggestion. Then they lived separately. (2)
One day, Sura found not much food in the sea. So, he went to the land and searched for food in the river. Seeing that, Baya got angry. “ What are you doing here? This is my territory!” he yelled to Sura. “There is water in the river, right? This is also my place! “replied Sura. Then Sura and Baya fought again. They both hit each other. (3)
Both of them tried to bite each other’s tail. Baya bit Sura’s tail very hard until Sura gave up and went back to the sea. The place where they had a fight was a mess. People then talked about it and named the place Surabaya. It is the combination of both names, Sura and Baya. (4)
