Ch. 5 Infant Reflexes

 

Infant Reflex: Sucking 

• when held up with feet flat on surface, makes stepping motions

• Helps with obtaining food for survival, when an object touces roof of mouth & disappears at 6 mos

• Stroke sole of foot, toes fan out & curl

• fist closes

Infant Reflex: Rooting

• toes fan and curl

• Helps with feeding and ends between 3 and 4 mos.

• fist closes when palm is stroked

• arms and legs flail

Infant Reflex: Moro, ends around 6 mos.

• Placing one foot in front of another in a stepping motion

• the startle reflex when legs and arms flail, ends at 6 mos.

• fist closes when palm is stroked

• turns toward food source when cheek is brushed

Infant Reflex: Palmar grasp ends between 3 -12 mos.

• Jumps when scared

• when you stroke the infant's palm and the fist closes

• startle reflex

• arms and legs flair

Infant Reflex: Babinski

• holds head up

• turns cheek towards source of food

• When held up on a flat surface, lifts one foot in front of another in a steppig motion

• Stroke sole of foot, toes fan out & curl ends about 12 mos.

• is voluntary
• is involuntary

Infant Reflex: Stepping

• Pulls themself up using their arms and torso

• When held up, places one foot in front of another in a stepping motion, ends at 2-3 mos.

• Crawling motion

• Sits up on their own
