In the Chinese antiquity tests were used to assess the performance of individuals. This system took place in order to promote or give to scholars in government positions. A set of tests assessing different aspects were given together (physically related, art, etc.). These were batteries ( a set of test that were created and should be given together). There was than a set of national multi-stage assessment. This system was later adapted by the British to select crew members. This was than picked up by the Americans.
