Why it matters that teens are reading less

Most of us spend much more time with digital media than we did ten years ago. But today’s

teens have grown up with smartphones in their pockets. Compared to teens from 20 years ago,

the way they use traditional media like books and movies is very different.

My co-authors and I looked at surveys of over one million U.S. teens collected since 1976

and found a huge change in how teens spend their free time.

More and more, books seem to be getting ignored.

By 2016, the average 12th-grade student said they spent about six hours a day texting,

using social media, and being online during their free time. And that’s only three activities; if we

included other media activities, that number would probably be even higher.

English: The World’s Language

English is the world’s leading international language. It is the principal language spoken in Britain,

USA, Canada, Australia and other countries such as Uganda and Botswana. Almost 400 million

people in the world speak English as their first language; about the same number as Spanish,

but less than Mandarin, Chinese or Hindi. English is the main second language in India, South Africa

and many parts of Africa and Asia. But – more and more – it is also the language of international

commerce, of business, of diplomacy and of tourism.

How did English reach the special position in which it finds itself today? Mostly, the rise

of English to its position as the world’s main international language was a result of chance.

Britain was the world’s most active colonial nation in the 19th century, and British explorers and

colonists took their language with them wherever they went. English became the official language

of most of Britain’s colonies.

Why Do Dogs Wag Their Tails? This Might Be The Real Reason

A group of animal experts from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and the University

of Rome conducted a study on tail-wagging.

The scientists have two possible theories that could explain this. One possible hypothesis that

may explain why dogs wag their tails is domestication syndrome. This syndrome suggests that

humans may have unintentionally picked and bred dogs that wag their tails more often because it

was associated with other desirable traits such as tameness or friendliness toward people.

Another possible hypothesis is domesticated rhythmic wagging, which suggests humans

intentionally bred dogs that wag their tails because we enjoy the rhythm of it.

However, academics still note that these are merely theories, and specialized research is

needed to understand them better.

The team is now urging scientists to investigate all aspects of wagging to study its meaning.

This involves investigating whether tail-wagging changes as dogs grow older, how much of it

is voluntary, whether dogs are born with this skill or acquire it over time, and genetics’ role in

tail-wagging.

It’s worrying that professionals have to promote themselves

This is important. Streaming services still choose actors over 45 for their acting skills,

but younger actors need to have over a million followers just to be noticed. An actor is valued for

their usual skills, but also for how they can help promote a show or movie online.

The first time I saw this new situation was about twenty years ago during a commercial.

For two years, a friend and I were the main faces for a big company. In the third year, they got a

new agency, and the new director invited us to dinner to explain the new plans for the commercial.

We went to the dinner.

People used to invade celebrities’ privacy a lot, like with Cid Moreira’s bathtub and paparazzi

from Caras magazine chasing pregnant actresses. Calling actors ‘celebrities,’ as if being famous

is a job, became common in tabloids before it got even worse online.

People might say it’s just part of the job for famous actors, but what about a doctor who has to

keep up with media attention just to stay in business?

Imagine you’re in surgery, wearing a cap and feeling groggy from medicine, with your gown

open and a scalpel cutting you, while a film crew records everything to promote the doctor.

And on top of that, the crowded operating room means a higher risk of infection.

It’s worrying that professionals in any field have to promote themselves. In acting, this can lead

to cheap publicity; in medicine, it can look unprofessional; and in politics, it can lead to showy,

superficial behavior.

We need to tame the Alien.
