Phonics (terminology)

An approach that teaches the relation of the letters (graphemes) to the sounds (phonemes) they represent to teach reading

An individual speech sound that makes one word different from another. For example, the ‘b’ and ‘f’ in ‘bill’ and ‘fill’.

The ability to combine separate sounds or syllables into meaningful words.

A written letter, a group of letters, number or symbol that represents a single sound in speech.

The ability to hear, identify and manipulate the individual sound-phonemes- in spoken words.

Adding sounds is the process of attaching sounds to the beginning or end of words e.g adding /s/ to/at/ to say /sat/.

A broad term that includes phonemic awareness. It refers to the young learner’s understanding that spoken words are made up of sounds.

The child says all the sounds in the word. E.g. Cat - /c/, /a/, /t/.
