In the 1950s, Minamata, Japan, was an idyllic place until mercury pollution from the Chisso Corporation's chemical plant led to a severe environmental disaster. Mercury was transformed by bacteria into toxic methylmercury, which bioaccumulated in fish and caused Minamata Disease in humans and animals. The disease led to severe neurological symptoms and birth defects. Despite identifying the cause in 1959, the pollution continued until 1968. Cleanup efforts began in 1977, but the impact on Minamata's reputation as a paradise persists.
