A noun is a person, place, idea or thing. Adjectives describe nouns. They can also compare nouns. There are two kinds of adjectives that compare nouns. A comparative adjective compares two or more objects. Usually the objects have something in common. For example, Kelsey and Micah are both tall. But Kelsey is *taller* than Micah. Adding “-er” to the adjective “tall” makes it comparative. It shows that Kelsey is more tall than Micah. When an adjective ends in -y, we change it to an “i” and then add “er” to make it comparative. For example, “smelly” becomes “smellier.” When using comparative and superlative adjectives to compare things, we use the word “than.” This is different from the word “then.” “Than” means you are comparing things. Superlative adjectives show which object has the *most* of a trait. These adjectives are used to describe one person or thing in a group of three or more. They show which one is the most or least. Chrissy is 7, Jonno is 8 and Tucker is 9. Tucker is the oldest of the three. Adding “-est” to the adjective “old” makes it superlative. It shows that Tucker is the *most* old. When using superlative adjectives, we usually use “the” to start the phrase. When an adjective ends in a -y, we change it to an “i” and then add “-est” to make it superlative. “Funny” becomes “funniest.” In the sentence, “My cat is smelly,” “smelly” is the adjective.
