Idi Amin was a notorious Ugandan dictator known for his brutal regime. Born in Uganda, he joined the British colonial army and rose through the ranks despite a reputation for violence. Amin seized power in a 1971 coup and ruled with an iron fist, committing numerous atrocities and earning a reputation for eccentricity. His regime was marked by ethnic and political massacres, with a death toll estimated at 500,000. Amin's international actions included offering refuge to hijackers and invading Tanzania, leading to his eventual overthrow. He lived in exile until his death in 2003.
