Floods can cause tremendous damage.  They can ruin houses, roads and buildings. Floods can take down trees and cause mudslides. It often leaves mud, sand and debris behind.  It can take months to clean up after a flood.

“That’s called a star, not a patch.”

“Oh! So, that’s where you got his name?”

“Yep.”

“He is really pretty. But he could be even prettier,” Ella said. She opened her purse and pulled out a long blue ribbon. I could braid his hair.”

Madison stopped brushing Star’s legs and turned toward her sister.

“Really?”

“Yes! I would love to!”

Jackson sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid in class. His name was Billy and he just moved here from Florida. His first day in class was yesterday and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, at recess, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend.

When the bell rang for recess, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.

“Hi Billy,” Jackson said as they walked outside. “Do you want to play basketball?”

“No. I’m not very good at basketball.”

“Do you want to play kickball?” Jackson asked
