La Salle’s expedition shipwrecked near Matagorda Bay, Texas in 1685. He and the other survivors quickly built Fort St. Louis to protect themselves from unfriendly Karankawa. They then tried to find the Mississippi River on foot, unaware that it was still hundre of miles away. On one of those trips, La Salle’s men, unhappy with his leadership, staged a mutiny against him.
