1894 Hong Kong Rat Plague

In the late 19th century, Hong Kong residents [kept rubbish in the corners of their houses / flushed rubbish into sewers] and set up [rubbish bins / pig farms] at home.

In the early 20th century, in order to improve public health, the Hong Kong government regularly sent people to clean and disinfect people's houses. They also [held talks on hygiene / built sewage systems].

During the anti-rodent campaigns in the 20th century, citizens would hang rat bins on electric lamps to [collect dead rats / place rat bait]. Citizens could also give the dead rats to the government in exchange for [food / money].
