in, 1793 -------------- invented the cottongin, a simple and inexpensive machine that mechanicallly separated cotton fiber from cotton seeds. The major value of the mechanical method of separating lint from seed was the fact that aone machine could do the work of many hands. The slaves who had been perfoming that slow and tedious job were now free to work in the fields growing more cotton.
