What does it mean to evaluate?

• A sequence of numbers that share a relationship.

  Example: In this numerical pattern, each term is 3 more than the term before. 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, . . .

• A system of coordinates formed by the perpendicular intersection of horizontal and vertical number lines.

• A rule that states the order in which the operations in an expression should be done:

  Step 1: Perform operations inside parentheses.

  Step 2: Multiply and divide from left to right.

  Step 3: Add and subtract from left to right.

• To substitute values for the variables in an expression and then simplify the resulting expression.

  Example:

  7 + 5 ⋅ n for n = 2.

  7 + 5 ⋅ n = 7 + 5 ⋅ 2 Substitute 2 for n.

  = 7 + 10 Multiply.

  = 17 Add.
