What is taxonomy?

• A way of using a dichotomous key.

Scientists classify organisms using dichotomous keys.  Classification is 

• the process of separating animals by mammal and other. 
• Naming organisms with a new name.
• the process of arranging organisms or objects into groups based on their characteristics or properties.

You can identify an organism using 2 different methods: field guides and dichotomous keys. A dichotomous key is 

• a 2 choice system, where you choose which of the statements is correct, and this leads you to the next question
• books of various organisms that contain pictures of each organism
• how something looks
• a fancy name for classification.

Why do we classify organisms? 

• It makes it easier to identify organisms.
• It helps us study them, & determine information about them.
• It can provide a lot of info about an organism with very few words.
