Main Idea

• What an article or passage is MOSTLY about- the main point the author is trying to make

• A detail that helps describe the main point

• A trait that describes a character

• Comparing or contrasting two points

Supporting details

• Details that tell you what a character is like

• First person, second person, or third person

• Facts, reasons, examples, or descriptions that expand on a main idea

• The plot of a story

Summary

• Telling exactly what happened in the story word by word

• Restating what happened in the story in order, in your own words, and including ONLY the important points

• An quote from the text

• What the author says about the text

Inference

• A guess that you make

• A reasonable guess that you make based off of evidence in the text and background knowledge

• Similar to a summary

• Paraphrasing

Claim

• Has to do with money

• A type of text

• A promise

• An author's stated belief or thought

Support

• To provide evidence for something, to show that it is true

• To break apart piece by piece

• A point of view

• A way to organize a text

Fact

• Something that can be proven to be true

• An example

• An opinion

• A phrase

Describe

• To tell

• to tell IN DETAIL what a character or event looks like...sounds like...smells like...etc.

• To quote from the text exactly

• To break apart

Conclude

• To form an opinion or thought, to end or stop; to infer something after reading the text

• The author's main point

• An example from the text used to support something.

• A thought or feeling.

Narrator

• The person telling the story

• The main character

• Supporting Characters

• Whoever has the most dialogue
