A fire can be serious. But these few simple tips can help keep you safe:

1. Put a smoke detector on every level of your home. Check the batteries once a month.
2. Make an escape plan with your family. Plan two ways to get out of each room in case of fire. Pick a spot to meet outside. Then practice!
3. If your city does not have 911, know the phone number for the fire department.
4. If there is a fire, feel a door before opening it. If it is warm, do not open it. Use another way out.
5. Crawl low under smoke.
6. If your clothes catch fire, stop and drop to the ground. Roll around to put out the flames.
