Inference Assessment

Chloe feels horrible.  Her throat is so sore that she can barely swallow.  Her head hurts, her body aches and she has a fever.  "Today is supposed to be special.  It's not going to be a very fun birthday this year, "she thinks, when she hears her mom calling the doctor's office. 
What can you infer?

• She will get extra presents because she's sick

• She will go to the doctor on her birthday

• She will have fun on her birthday

The weather was mild for winter, and Owen was eager for the last bell to ring.  After school, his mom was taking him to the park.  "We need to make the most of the weather," she had said that morning, because tomorrow you'll be wearing your boots and snow pants.
It is likely that

• Owen is getting some new clothes

• It is going to snow soon

• Owen doesn't like to play at the park

What is an inference?

• reasonable guess

• short version of a story

• reasonable guess that must make sense

• lesson of the story

We use two things to make an inference.  What are they?

• Background knowledge and summaries

• evidence from the text or picture and a summary

• background knowledge and the lesson learned

• background knowledge and evidence from the text

A student is reading a book and suddenly looks up, surprised. What can you infer about the book?

• The book is boring.

• The book has a surprising plot twist.

• The book is too difficult for the student.

• The student saw something interesting in the room.

A character in a book is described as having a furrowed brow and clenched fists. What can you infer about this character's emotions?

• The character is relaxed.

• The character is excited.

• The character is angry or frustrated.

• The character is happy.

In a narrative, if a character's voice is described as "barely above a whisper" during a tense scene, what can you infer about the character's emotional state?

• They are excited.

• They are indifferent.

• They are scared or anxious.

• They are confident.

What is an Inference?

• A conclusion or judgement based on evidences and our background knowledge.

• Is what the story is about.

• In when you find the similarity between two or more things.

• Is when you compare two or more things using the words like or as.

Tiffany held her breath as her teacher returned the math test the class had taken last week.  Tiffany had not studied very hard or long for the test, and she was worried about her grade.  Her teacher handed Tiffany her test.  Tiffany groaned and put her head down on her desk.  

I can infer...

• she earned a bad grade on the test

• she received a good grade on the test

• she's tired
