There are several stages in the recycling process. First, used aluminum cans are shredded up into small pieces. Very hot air is blown over the these pieces to remove any ink, paint, or other material. The bits of aluminum are then melted. The hot liquid aluminum is stirred and poured into molds. As it cools, the aluminum forms into huge solid blocks called ingots. One ingot can weigh as much as 36,000 pounds and contain the aluminum from more than a million cans. The ingots are sent to factories called mills, where they are rolled out into thin, flexible sheets. These sheets can be turned into more cans or other products. It can take as little as 60 days for an aluminum can to be recycled and returned to shelf in a store. Aluminum is an extremely durable, long-lasting material. It can be recycled over and over without losing any of its original strength or other characteristics. Look at the diagram. Which step belongs in the empty box?

Paint and ink are cleaned off the pieces

the can is filled with juice or soda and sent to the grocery store

a person puts the can in a recycling bin

aluminum sheets are turned into new cans
