A forest is an area of land dominated by trees. It is the dominant
terrestrial ecosystem on Earth, and is distributed around the globe. This
ecosystem is a complex web of organisms that includes plants, animals, fungi and
bacteria. There are broadly three major types of forests – tropical, temperate,
and boreal forests. They are classified depending on their latitude, local soil, rainfall
and prevailing temperatures. Tropical rainforests boast the great diversity of species
of all ecosystems on earth. They don’t experience winter and normally receive 100
inches of rain annually. Temperate coniferous forests are characterized by moist
climate and a prolonged growing season, thanks to high levels of precipitation. While
boreal forests normally have thin soil, thanks to the cold temperatures that undermine
the rate of decomposition.
