Spreadsheet Vocabulary

Cell

• Each rectangle in a spreadsheet. Can contain text, formulas, and functions.

• A type of data structure used in programming.

• A unit of biological life.

• A small room in a prison.

Active cell

• The cell that is currently selected and indicated by a solid border.

• The cell that contains the highest value in a range.

• The cell that is locked for editing.

• The cell that is hidden from view.

Column

• A group of cells that go from the left of the spreadsheet to the right and are identified by numbers.

• A group of cells that go from the top of the spreadsheet to the bottom and are identified by letters.

• A single cell in a spreadsheet identified by a unique name.

• A group of cells that are used for calculations and are identified by symbols.

Cell Alignment

• How the text is positioned within the borders of the cell.

• The way cells are colored in a spreadsheet.

• The size of the cell in relation to the text.

• The type of font used in the cell.

Cell address

• Where a column and row intersect. Named by listing the column letter then the row number.

• A unique identifier for a spreadsheet file.

• The total number of rows in a spreadsheet.

• A formula used to calculate values in a cell.

Row

• A group of cells that go from the top of the spreadsheet to the bottom and are identified by letters.

• A group of cells that go from the left side of the spreadsheet to the right and are identified by numbers.

• A single cell in a spreadsheet identified by a unique name.

• A collection of formulas used to calculate values in a spreadsheet.

Statistics

• Numerical facts about a group of data.

• A method for collecting qualitative data.

• A type of graphical representation of data.

• A process of analyzing historical events.

Edit mode

• Allows you to edit existing data in a cell. Indicated by a blinking cursor visible in the cell.

• Prevents any changes to the data in a cell.

• Displays a summary of the data in the cell.

• Automatically saves changes made to the cell.

Format attributes

• Pieces of information that describe the appearance of the cell’s content.

• Settings that determine the functionality of a cell.

• Data types that define the kind of information stored in a cell.

• Formulas that calculate values based on cell content.
