Charles A. Briggs

• American Presbyterian Scholar who wrote the messiah of the gospels
• Was excommunicated from the church for heresy due to his liberal theology regarding the bible.

Elohim

• Hebrew word meaning Gods or Godhood
• Used in Exodus and to prove the Documentary Hypothesis

The Documentary Hypothesis

• Helps explain the origins and composition of the Torah
• The Pentateuch is independent documents rather exactly what God revealed to Moses.

Etiology

• the explanation of the origins of customs, beliefs, and events within religious context.
• Used in Genesis to provide cultural and religious significance of narratives

Fundamentalism

• Should be based on the LITERAL Bible alone and is historically accurate.
• Can't be Intellectual honesty (you believing every other science is wrong)
• May lead to atheism if not careful

• Seeks to ensure justice rather than vengeance (Isreal law system)
• Ex. Eye for an Eye, Tooth for Tooth, etc.

• Hebrew word refer creative retelling to bring out hidden dept and meaning
• Ex. Issac knew what was going to happen since he didn't fight his dad.

Mishnah

• Compilation of Jewish Oral law and tradition that expands on and interprets God's written law.
• Ex. The Oral Torah
