The Legend of Malin Kundang
A long time ago, on the coast of West Sumatra, lived a boy named Malin Kundang and his mother. They were very poor because his father had passed away when he was a baby. Malin was a smart and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish. When he was grown up, he decided to go to a big city to find a job to help his mother.
When Malin came back to his village, he was a rich merchant. He had a big ship and many crew. When he anchored, his mother, in old rags, came to greet him. But Malin, who was ashamed of his mother, refused to admit her. He said that his mother was just a poor old woman. His mother was very sad and angry. She cursed Malin that he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize. Suddenly, a storm came and his huge ship was wrecked. Malin was thrown out of his ship. He landed on a small island, and suddenly, he turned into a stone.
