Do you know what inspired the famous musical Cats?

The musical Cats premiered in the West End, London, in 1981 and has been successfully staged for over thirty years. It has been translated into ten languages and performed in more than twenty countries, receiving over thirty awards, including seven Tony Awards, the highest honor in theater.

In the musical, the Jellicle cats, a word only they know the meaning of, gather once a year for their leader to choose one and only one of them to go to a better place. Among the most notable characters are Munkustrap, the narrator of the story, Grizabella, the glamour cat, and Old Deuteronomy, the leader of the Jellicle cats.

The story is based on fourteen poems from the children's book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, written by T.S. Eliot, published in 1939.

Italian university switches to English

From opera at La Scala to football at the San Siro stadium, from the catwalks of fashion week to the soaring architecture of the cathedral, Milan is crowded with Italian icons. 

Which makes it even more of a cultural earthquake that one of Italy's leading universities - the Politecnico di Milano - is going to switch to the English language.

The university has announced that from 2014 most of its degree courses - including all its graduate courses - will be taught and assessed entirely in English rather than Italian.

The waters of globalization are rising around higher education - and the university believes that if it remains Italian-speaking it risks isolation and will be unable to compete as an international institution.

The origins of English

The story of the English language began in the fifth century when Germanic tribes invaded Celtic-speaking Britain and brought their languages with them. Later, Scandinavian Vikings invaded and settled with their languages too. In 1066 William I, from modern-day France, became king, and Norman-French became the language of the courts and official activity. People couldn’t understand each other at first, because the lower classes continued to use English while the upper classes spoke French, but gradually French began to influence English. An estimated 45 per cent of all English words have a French origin. By Shakespeare's time, Modern English had developed, printing had been invented and people had to start to agree on 'correct' spelling and vocabulary.
