Types of Mixtures

Brownian Motion

• The jerky, random movements of particles in a liquid colloid

Colloids

• Heterogeneous mixtures of intermediate-sized particles that do not settle out, nor can they be filtered apart.

• Homogeneous mixtures of small particles that settle out over time.

• Pure substances that cannot be separated by physical means.

• Mixtures of large particles that can be easily filtered.

Solute

• A substance that dissolves in the solvent

• A substance that is dissolved by the solute

• A liquid that dissolves other substances

• A mixture of two or more substances

What is a homogeneous mixture?

Solvent

Suspensions

• Mixtures containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed.

Heterogeneous mixture

• A mixture that has a uniform composition and the individual substances are indistinguishable.

• A mixture that does not have a uniform composition and in which the individual substances remain distinct.

• A mixture that is composed of only one type of substance.

• A mixture that can be separated into its components by physical means.

Tyndall Effect

• The absorption of light by a solid
