The Legend of Batu Menangis (The Crying Stone) of Sungai Kencana
In the heart of Sungai Kencana, a region nestled amongst rolling hills and emerald rivers, lived a beautiful young woman named Dewi. She was renowned for her radiant smile and gentle spirit, but also for her deep love for her mother, a frail woman who had raised her alone. One day, a handsome trader named Raden Surya arrived in their village, his ship laden with silks and spices. He was captivated by Dewi’s beauty and proposed marriage.
Dewi, torn between her love for her mother and the prospect of a new life with Raden Surya, asked for time to decide. Raden Surya, impatient and arrogant, demanded an immediate answer. Dewi, fearing she would leave her mother alone, refused. Enraged, Raden Surya publicly insulted Dewi, claiming she was ungrateful and selfish.
Dewi, heartbroken and humiliated, fled into the surrounding hills, her mother’s cries echoing behind her. She stumbled upon a hidden spring, and overcome with grief, she knelt and wept. Her tears flowed like the spring’s water, soaking the earth around her. Suddenly, a powerful tremor shook the ground. The earth began to harden around Dewi, slowly turning her into stone.
Her tears, however, continued to flow, carving a path down the hillside, forming a small stream. The villagers, witnessing this miraculous and tragic event, were filled with remorse. They called the stone "Batu Menangis," the Crying Stone, and the stream "Air Mata Dewi," Dewi's Tears.
Legend says that on nights when the moon hangs heavy in the sky, Dewi’s tears still flow, a constant reminder of the importance of kindness, humility, and the enduring bond between mother and child. And to this day, the villagers of Sungai Kencana treat each other with respect, fearing the wrath of the Crying Stone.
What happened to Dewi when she cried by the hidden spring?
