Components of a Turbine

Nozzle

• Used to direct the steam against the rotor, this allows you to convert steam pressure into velocity.

• A device that measures the temperature of steam.

• A component that stores steam for later use.

• A mechanism that increases the pressure of steam.

Moving and fixed blades

• Made of stainless steel, these capture steam as it comes out of the nozzle, and allow steam passages to be formed across the wheel of the turbine.

• Constructed from aluminum, these are designed to reduce friction in the turbine.

• Composed of plastic, these are used to insulate the turbine from heat.

• Made of copper, these are primarily used for electrical conductivity in the turbine.

Outlet

• Where the steam pressure enters the turbine before conversion to mechanical energy.

• Where the steam pressure leaves the turbine after it has been used and converted into mechanical energy.

• A component that increases the steam pressure before it enters the turbine.

• A location where mechanical energy is stored after being generated.

Shaft

• Has one or more rotor wheels mounted on it and transfers power out of the turbine.

• Is a component that stores energy in a turbine.

• Is a type of valve used to control fluid flow.

• Is a part that cools the turbine during operation.

Casing

• The housing that contains the rotor or shaft which holds stationary nozzles that direct steam to the rotor.

• A protective cover for electrical components.

• A type of insulation used in thermal systems.

• A structural element that supports the weight of machinery.

Governor

• A device used to regulate steam flow and operating speed.

• A type of engine used in automobiles.

• A mechanism for controlling temperature in a furnace.

• A tool for measuring pressure in a pipeline.

Inlet

• Where the steam pressure enters the turbine.

• A component that regulates the flow of steam out of the turbine.

• The part of the turbine that generates electricity.

• A valve that controls the temperature of the steam.
