• CO2 is less soluble than oxygen in the blood.

• CO2 turns into carbonic acid when it combines with water in the blood.

Oropharynx function

• Passageway for air and food; region of the throat posterior to the oral cavity

• Main site for gas exchange in the lungs

• Primary location for taste sensation

• Area responsible for vocal cord production

Role of the Diaphragm in Breathing

• Contracts to increase thoracic cavity volume, drawing air into the lungs

• Relaxes to decrease thoracic cavity volume, pushing air out of the lungs

• Expands the rib cage to allow for more air intake

• Closes off the trachea to prevent air from entering the lungs

• Air is warmed and humidified in the lungs before entering the bloodstream.

• Air is directly filtered by the trachea before reaching the lungs.
