About this resource

This quiz thoroughly assesses 10th-grade students' reading comprehension skills through a complex informational text about the Antarctic Treaty and governance of Antarctica. The questions target multiple levels of text analysis, requiring students to demonstrate vocabulary knowledge in context, draw inferences from multiple paragraphs, analyze author's tone and word choice, synthesize information to create summaries, and evaluate cause-and-effect relationships within the text. Students must navigate a sophisticated article with formal academic language, complex sentence structures, and nuanced concepts about international cooperation, environmental protection, and governmental regulation. The assessment demands higher-order thinking skills as students must not only locate explicit information but also interpret implicit meanings, analyze organizational patterns, and evaluate the author's purpose and methods. This level of textual complexity and analytical thinking aligns perfectly with the expectations for students preparing for more advanced literary and informational text analysis. Created by Vanida Costello, an English teacher in the US who teaches grade 10. This comprehensive reading assessment serves multiple instructional purposes, functioning effectively as a formative assessment tool, homework assignment, or review activity for students studying informational text analysis. Teachers can use this quiz to gauge student understanding of complex text structures, evaluate comprehension of sophisticated vocabulary, and assess students' ability to synthesize information across multiple paragraphs. The assessment works particularly well as a practice exercise before standardized testing or as a warm-up activity to reinforce close reading strategies. The variety of question types allows teachers to identify specific areas where students may need additional support, whether in vocabulary development, inferential reasoning, or text organization analysis. This quiz directly supports CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.1, RI.9-10.2, RI.9-10.4, RI.9-10.5, and RI.9-10.8, providing comprehensive coverage of key informational text standards for high school students.

Which of these is the best summary of the section "Governed by Treaty"?

Seven countries claimed control over land in Antarctica in the 1940s, and each refused to recognize the territorial claims of the other nations. Despite these political disputes, scientists from all over the world wanted to conduct research there. Starting in 1957, international teams of scientists cooperated to establish coastal bases and inland stations on the icy continent.

In the 1940s several countries had conflicting territorial claims in Antarctica. The success of an international scientific research project in the 1950s, however, led to the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959. This 12-nation agreement detailed what countries could and could not do on Antarctica and required the signers to meet periodically to review the treaty's goals.

Although early stakeholders could not have known what the future held for Antarctica, many countries did work together to preserve the continent. For example, 12 countries signed a treaty that stated explicitly what countries were allowed to do in Antarctica. Also, 67 nations agreed to conduct research together and, in doing so, made significant discoveries.

The International Geophysical Year project and the Antarctic Treaty were two important developments that determined the future of Antarctica. The Antarctic Treaty, which went into effect in 1961, was signed by Argentina, Chile, Great Britain, France, and the United States. Because of this treaty, nations cannot use Antarctica for military purposes.
