MULTIPLE SELECT QUESTION

30 sec • 1 pt

Read and circle True or False. Correct the false statements. (8 marks) Margaret Thatcher believed very strongly in certain values, especially hard work and nationalism, which meant that she wanted the United Kingdom to be politically independent. Many industries in the United Kingdom, like electricity, water, petrol, and phone communication, used to be controlled by the government. Margaret Thatcher sold these to private businesses so that several different businesses could offer these products and services. This made the prices lower, but some people believe that the quality was worse. At that time, trade unions, such as the coalminers, were very powerful. These represented workers and had strict rules on wages, places of work, and how many hours people could work. Although this helped workers, the unions often forced workers to strike to try to make changes. Some workers didn’t want to strike, but they had no choice. During the strikes, businesses couldn’t make as many products, so they couldn’t compete with other countries to sell their goods. To prevent workers striking, Margaret Thatcher passed laws that gave trade unions less power.

OPEN ENDED QUESTION

3 mins • 1 pt

Read and write answers to the questions. (6 marks) When Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union, it was in trouble. The government owned all the farms, but they couldn’t manage them very well. So there wasn’t enough food for everyone. The economy was very weak. Mikhail Gorbachev introduced new plans to make the economy stronger, such as giving more control to farmers and businesses so that they could decide what products to make, how many to make, and the price they wanted to sell them for. He also wanted society to be freer and to offer people more opportunities. Mikhail Gorbachev began to allow more freedom to newspapers and television shows. He called this glasnost, or ‘openness’. He also began to develop relationships with other countries, especially the United States under President Ronald Reagan and the United Kingdom under Margaret Thatcher. Mikhail Gorbachev allowed all the Soviet republics in eastern Europe to make changes so that they could become independent. Gradually, these republics introduced democratic governments. Mikhail Gorbachev told the Soviet army to leave these countries. Thanks to his efforts, communism was defeated. The Soviet Union was divided into 15 separate independent countries. Mikhail Gorbachev received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1990.
