MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION
30 sec • 1 pt
1 South Africa is a country of minorities. Its people speak at least twenty languages, none of which is the first language of a majority of the population. 2 The implementation of apartheid created divisions between groups of people to an extreme degree by legally classifying South Africa’s people into exclusive racial and ethnic groups and restricting contact between them whenever possible. According to the system of racial classification formalized by apartheid, South Africa’s population was divided into four major racial groups: “white,” “coloured,” “Indian,” and “African”. 3 Even as apartheid began to be done away with in the mid 1980’s, divisions within the white minority and the Black majority were apparent. 4 In 1983, a new constitution allowed certain groups to vote in national elections, but limited the ways in which these groups could participate. Laws were passed providing more freedoms and lifting a ban on “interracial marriages” but racial classifications remained.
Determine which part of the except BEST describes the concept of apartheid.
