Animal Husbandry in Central Asia

Animal husbandry, or raising animals, is very important in northern and central Asia. In Mongolia, for example, about 80% of the country's farm income comes from raising animals. However, this way of life is in danger because of overgrazing and climate change. The Gobi Desert is growing bigger because of rising temperatures, which forces herders to move into smaller areas.

Cashmere, a soft wool from goats, is in high demand, but herders stay poor unless they have a large herd. The government has set a limit on how many animals each herder can own, but many herders ignore this rule so they can make more money to support their families. Herders know that overgrazing is damaging the land, but they have little reason to protect it.
