2. A student is writing a research report about honeybees and Colony Collapse Disorder. Read both sources and the direction that follows. Source 1: A science article By now you have likely heard about the problems with the honeybee population. Hives are dying off at increased rates, compromising the pollination industry. What is the pollination industry? The pollination industry is made up of beekeepers who transport their hives periodically to vegetable and fruit farms who rely on bees to pollinate their crops. Because beekeepers have fewer hives, they move their hives farther and more frequently in order to meet the demand from farms. Scientists believe that this puts further stress on the colonies, which can translate into a decline in the bees’ general health. This decline in health can eventually contribute to Colony Collapse Disorder. Source 2: A government report Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has proven to be somewhat of a scientific mystery. The symptoms are clear, but the exact causes have not been identified. Scientists believe that CCD may result from a combined incidence of disease-causing germs, parasites, and stress on the colonies resulting from hive mismanagement and our changing environment. Since researchers have been unable to identify a specific cause or causes, the USDA suggests that beekeepers tend to the overall health of the colonies by reducing stress and providing supplements to bees’ diet. The government agency asks the public to limit use of pesticides and to increase plantings of pollen sources. The student synthesized information from both sources to improve her understanding of honeybees and Colony Collapse Disorder.

Select TWO notes that correctly synthesize information from both sources.

Colony Collapse Disorder has had a significant impact on the pollination industry.
Corporate farming and its reliance on the pollination industry have played the most significant contributing role to Colony Collapse Disorder.
Transporting hives too frequently for long distances is a form of mismanagement because it stresses the bees and reduces the overall health of the colonies.
Supplementing bees’ diets will help improve the overall health of the colonies.
Bees and their health are integral to U.S. agriculture, so it is of dire importance that scientists find out what is causing their decline.

4. A student is writing a report about successful businesses. The student found two reliable sources. Read the sources and complete the task that follows. Source 1: In 1908, Henry Ford created the famous Model T automobile. The car became somewhat popular, but Ford wanted it to reach a wider range of customers. He developed an assembly line process for producing his Model T automobile in 1913. By having different workers install specific parts as the vehicle moved slowly along a line, the cost and time needed to build the car was reduced. This made the Model T even more affordable, and, therefore, many more people bought the Ford car. Source 2: McDonald’s is one of the most successful businesses in the world. Something the restaurant is known for is its speed of service. When the first McDonald’s opened in Southern California in the 1940s, it aimed to be a place for regular people to eat instead of most restaurants of the time that only wealthy people could afford. McDonald’s installed a large grill and used spatulas that could flip multiple burgers at a time. Customers could get a large order of burgers and fries quickly because of the restaurant’s “Speedee Service System.” When Ray Kroc took over the McDonald’s company and spread the eatery across the country, he continued to focus on making good food fast. Which question would help the student broaden the focus of additional research?

Why did businesses like Ford and McDonald’s have an impact on American society?
How many total businesses have been able to expand to other parts of the world?
What would cause a person to support a business like Ford or McDonald’s?
When was the best time in history for someone to start a successful business?

6. A student is writing a paper on the Harlem Renaissance and has found an excerpt from the following source. from The Flowering of African-American Culture by Wallace Williams, Ph.D. (Originally published in the Journal of African-American Historical Studies in 1994) For a period of about twenty years beginning in 1918, there was, in New York City, a great flowering of African American culture and art. It became known as the Harlem Renaissance. Many African-American writers, poets, painters, and musicians had moved to Harlem from elsewhere in the United States. Without deliberately trying, this community of artists began to reshape the ways African Americans viewed and expressed themselves. They freed themselves from the stuffy expectations of their upright Victorian parents and grandparents, and they undermined the soul-crushing stereotypes that many white people had of black Americans. After reviewing this source, the student has decided that this source is a credible. Is this true or false?
