Design and Typography Terms

Font Weight

• Indicates the thickness of a font. For example, bold type has a heavier font weight.

• Refers to the style of the font, such as italic or regular.

• Describes the color of the font, such as red or blue.

• Specifies the size of the font in points.

Color Theory

• The study of how colors affect viewers mentally and emotionally.

• A method for mixing colors to create new shades.

• A technique for painting with watercolors.

• A system for categorizing colors based on temperature.

Drop Cap

• A large initial letter at the start of the text that drops into the line or lines of text below.

• A decorative element used to enhance the visual appeal of a page.

• A type of font that is larger than the rest of the text.

• A method of aligning text to the left margin.

Brandmark

• A type of logo that includes the company name

• A specific type of logo that uses a symbol instead of the company name, like the Nike swoosh.

• A logo that is only text-based

• A logo that changes colors frequently

Copyright

• The right of copyright gives protection to the originator of material to prevent use without express permission or acknowledgment of the author.

• A legal term that refers to the ownership of a creative work, allowing the creator to control its use.

• A type of license that allows others to use a work without restrictions.

Justified Text

• A paragraph where all lines are left-aligned.

• A paragraph or block of text in which all words in all lines are spaced out such that the first word aligns with the left margin and the last word aligns with the right margin.

• A paragraph that is centered on the page.

• A paragraph that has a hanging indent.

Raster Image

• A type of vector image that uses paths and points.

• A rectangular pattern of lines that an electron beam follows on a television or computer screen. A raster image is made up of pixels.

Heading

• Short words or phrases that appear at the top of a page.

Grayscale

• A color palette that only uses black, white, and the shades of gray in between.

• A color palette that includes all colors of the rainbow.

• A color palette that uses only bright and vibrant colors.

• A color palette that consists of only warm colors.

Tracking

• Adjusting the spacing throughout an entire word.

• Changing the font style of a word.
