A process that changes (transforms) individuals by raising the level of motivation and morality in both the follower and leader.

A process of formal exchanges between leaders and followers

Act as a moral/ethical role model for the vision - Have high standards - Followers identify with the leader and want to follow their vision

Attend to the individual needs of followers - Provide support and direction when needed - Help followers become fully actualized (reach their potential)

Stimulate followers to be creative and innovative - Encourage them to challenge their own beliefs and those of the leader/organization - Encourage trying new approaches

Inspire followers to commit to a shared vision - Use symbols and emotional appeals to focus on group interests

Exchange process: effort by followers is rewarded with a specific outcome

Management by Exception:

Leader monitors for mistakes and corrects them immediately

Management by Exception:

Leader only intervenes after standards are not met or problems arise

Non-Leadership Factor: This is the absence of leadership
