The Alfred P Murrah Federal Building located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, housed many government offices. On April 19, 1995, the building was destroyed by an American in a bomb attack. Many people lost their lives.

A more than 80-year-old American Elm Tree, located in a nearby parking lot survived the bombing. The tree, an important symbol of survival and hope, is featured in the present-day memorial.
