Puss in Boots
Once upon a time, there was a poor miller who had three sons. When the miller died, he left his mill to his oldest son, his donkey to the second, and a cat to the youngest. The youngest son was sad because he thought a cat was useless.
However, the cat was clever and could talk. He asked for a pair of boots and a bag. “Trust me, master,” said the cat, “I will make your fortune.” The cat put on the boots and went to the forest. He caught a rabbit and brought it to the king, saying it was a gift from his master, the Marquis of Carabas (the title the cat gave to his master).
Every day, the cat brought gifts to the king and made his master seem rich and noble. One day, the cat heard the king would travel by carriage along the river. The cat told his master to bathe in the river and pretend he was drowning. When the king’s carriage passed by, the cat cried for help. He told the king that thieves had stolen his master’s clothes. The king believed him and gave the young man royal clothes.
Then, the cat ran ahead and tricked farmers and workers into telling the king that the land they worked on belonged to the Marquis of Carabas. The land actually belonged to a cruel ogre. The cat visited the ogre and tricked him into turning into a mouse. When the ogre turned into a mouse, the cat ate him.
The king was impressed and gave his daughter’s hand in marriage to the young man. The young man married the princess and lived happily ever after 1.with his clever cat, Puss in Boots.
Who did the miller leave the cat to?
