Why Do Parents Object to No Cell Phones in Schools?
Despite a great deal of evidence that mobile phones cause a lot of issues with youth mental health, some parents have been opposed to limiting access to phones in school.
The reason I hear most often from parents is the fear of school shootings or some other tragedy or violence.
Parents want the immediate message that their kid is OK. And I get that. I’m a mom, too, and we are a nation that lives in terror of school shootings and violence.
First, consider that while the media publicizes school shootings and they capture the national attention, and for good reason, they are still rare.
A child has a greater chance of being injured or killed by falling debris than of being killed in a school shooting. That’s not to say we shouldn’t be prepared but how does a child having one at school prevent them from getting hurt?
