What advantages does a WLAN have compared to a LAN?

• Installation is far easier - cables don't need to be pulled through ceilings or walls.

• It is easier and more practical to make use of wireless connectivity between buildings.

• It is easy to add or remove computers and devices - it is not fixed.

• Adds mobility for users with mobile devices.

• It avoids clutter in terms of cables that might get in the way.

How does a Wired Connection work?

What are the main differences between UTP and Fibre Optic?

• Fibre has a much faster data transmission - Fibre uses light signals to transmit data, whereas UTP uses electrical signals to transmit data through copper wires.

• UTP cables can only span a certain distance before the signal strengths get weak and you have a loss of signal on the cable. Fibre cables can span much longer distances.

• With the right equipment, UTP cables can be 'eaves-dropped' on and data being transmitted can be intercepted. Fibre is immune to eavesdropping.

• UTP can sometimes be affected by electrical sources - sometimes termed EMI (electromagnetic interference). Fibre is not affected in this way.
